Terrain Rating Criteria
Gentle- Good footbed without roots, rocks or other hazards that might cause someone to trip
- No sections with elevation gain/loss where the footbed is uneven or where there are rocks that could roll underfoot
- Never includes any section with bushwacking, fixed rope, fords, hand holds, ladders or rock hops.
Moderately gentle- Fair footbed allows for some sections with roots, rocks or other hazards that might cause someone to trip
- Never includes any section with bushwacking, fixed rope, fords, hand holds, ladders or rock hops.
Intermediate- Fair footbed allows for longer sections with roots, rocks or other hazards that might cause someone to trip
- Can have sections with elevation gain/loss where the footbed is uneven or where there are rocks that could roll underfoot
- May have occasional, very short sections where hand-holds or ladders are required.
- Never includes bushwacking, fixed rope or fords
- Prolonged sections of sandy terrain, especially involving elevation gain or loss
- Could involve rock hops to cross streams
- Crossing permanent snowfields with little or no slope
Rough- Can have extended sections with elevation gain/loss where the footbed is uneven or where there are rocks that could roll underfoot
- Could involve rock hops or short fords to cross streams
- Crossing permanent snowfields with moderate slopes
- Involves short sections with one or more of the following:
- Bushwacking
- Fixed rope
- Hand holds required
- Ladders
- Scree
Very rough- Crossing permanent snowfields with steep slopes
- Involves extended sections with one or more of the following:
- Bushwacking
- Fixed rope
- Fords of streams or rivers
- Hand holds required
- Ladders
- Scree
