Rhododendron Lake MapCdn Topo: Nanaimo Lakes, 92F/1 or Recreation guide to NW Bay Division. |
Northwest Bay Logging Roads Trailhead: Druve north from Victoria on highway 1, take the Naniamo bypass (highway 19) around Naniamo. North of Nanoose Bay watch for the start of a logging road on the left hand side of the highway. Watch for a large painted old skidder up at the side of the road There is some signage along the logging roads but it is best to ask at the logging way station if someone is there.
A map is available from the administration office of the Northwest Bay Division of MacMillan Bloedel which is described as being "a short ways west of the traffic light" (in Port Alberni?).
Note: The following directions are taken from an old map (1977/78) you are advised to check that they have not changed. I have not visited this area (yet) but will revise the directions once I have.
There appear to be several possible routes to the lake, one choice would be to take the main logging road (#155) west approximately 5km to 155E, here you turn left (south) and proceed about 8km to a spur road shortly after the junction with E50 (stay left at the junction). Follow the spur road to a "T", take the left fork to a "Y" junction taking the right fork to the lake.
Option 2 - Follow 155 west from the highway for about 4km turning south (left) on 155A. Follow this road about 9.5km to the junction with 155C. Turn right onto 155C and follow it to the 2nd junction with 155B. Turn left onto 155B and the lake is a short ways down on the left hand side.
