Description
This cycle touring route takes advantage of 3 BC Ferry crossings to provide rest stops for the cyclist.
Starting from the Brentwood Bay ferry terminal take the ferry across to Mill Bay, from here cycle north through the village of Mill Bay and onto the Trans Canada Highway. Ride north up the hill to the light at Kilmalu Road, turn right here and ride down to Telegraph Bay Road, the first left. Follow this through the gently rolling countryside to Fisher Road which you continue following north until you reach Cherry Point Road. Take this road to the east (right). Follow this road to Cowichan Bay Road and the town of Cowichan Bay and then across a bridge to Tzouhalem Road on which you cycle north past the Butter Church to Maple Bay Road. Turn right onto Maple Bay Road and cycle towards Maple Bay. As you come down a hill watch for Herd Road on your left. Take this turn and cycle on to the town of Crofton where your next ferry crossing awaits.
The ferry, which leaves from the end of Osborne Bay Road, will take you across to Vesuvius on Salt Spring Island. Cycle up to an intersection with the road to Ganges and Fulford. Take this road to the right and cycle through Ganges and up a large hill. Keep on this road all the way to Fulford Harbour and the ferry back to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island.
From Swartz Bay, if you haven't had the foresight to leave a vehicle to shuttle you back to Brentwood Bay, take your bike up to the passenger terminal and cycle down to Lands End Road (the first intersection). From here you can either continue on to the highway making your way back to Brentwood Bay via many of the side roads or follow Lands End Road around the northern shore of the Saanich Peninsula and take West Saanich Road back to Brentwood Bay (cycling down the highway to Wain Road is a shorter route, you can take Wain Road across to West Saanich Road). It would be prudent to take an earlier exit off the highway if one of the Vancouver/Victoria ferries is scheduled to dock shortly after you arrive.
